How it began

Wander120 was created when Founder, Anne Barrowclough, based in New Zealand, began researching the benefits of mind wandering after her experience with elderly parents with dementia-related conditions.

She found that beginning a conversation with a prompt or a thought such as ‘you are on a swing’ or 'you are swimming in the ocean', enabled her parents to connect through random associations to memories and places that had clarity for them. It made them calm and relaxed, less anxious, and better able to communicate. Anne’s research led her to several books and articles that introduced her to the concept of unfocus – the stopping of focused thought to allow mind-wandering or unfocused thoughts to emerge. “Reducing cognitive load increases creativity and makes one more exploratory, broadens perceptual and mental scope, and improves mood."  Moshe Bar, Mind-wandering

Over the course of her extensive management career, Anne has also observed how work outputs have become increasingly task-focused and technology-driven; even relaxation has moved this way. The downstream effect of this highly structured world is that our ability to activate the creative thinking parts of our brain has suffered. It didn’t take long for Anne to identify the profound impact that ‘unfocusing’ could have on improving our problem-solving and creative thinking skills inside and outside of the workplace. Now all she needed was a simple tool to unlock this opportunity. The seed for Wander120 was planted.

Neuroscientists, academics, industry leaders, employees working remotely or in the office, the young, the old have all helped to shape the final product. At its core however, Wander120 has always needed to deliver against three core values:
